Homeowners almost always blame the furnace or the air conditioner. But when a system that tests fine still cannot keep the house comfortable, the ductwork is usually where the loss is happening — and duct repair costs a fraction of what equipment replacement does.
1. Some rooms never reach temperature
If the back bedroom is always five degrees off from the hallway, the most likely cause is a disconnected, crushed or badly leaking run serving that space. This is the symptom we hear about most often, and it is almost never the equipment.
2. Your bills climbed with no change in habits
Ducts running through an uninsulated attic can leak twenty to thirty percent of the air the system moves. You are paying to cool your attic, and the equipment runs longer trying to compensate.
In an Antioch or Brentwood summer, when attic temperatures push past 130 degrees, that loss compounds badly.
3. Excessive dust and dirty registers
Leaks on the return side pull attic and crawlspace air — along with insulation fibers and dust — directly into the system and then distribute it through the house. Dark streaking around register edges is a reliable tell.
4. Whistling, rattling or roaring at startup
Air escaping through a gap makes noise. So does a duct that has come loose from its support and vibrates against framing. A system that is suddenly louder than it used to be has usually developed a mechanical problem in the duct run.
5. Visible damage in the attic or crawlspace
Flex duct sags, tears and gets crushed by anyone moving through the attic. Torn insulation, kinked runs and boots that have separated from the ceiling register are all straightforward to spot once you know what to look for — and all worth fixing.
What a proper duct repair involves
We trace every supply and return run, seal joints and boots with mastic rather than tape, replace runs that are past sealing, repair insulation to the correct R-value, and then re-measure airflow at the registers so the improvement is documented rather than assumed.
Most homes see noticeably more even temperatures immediately, and the energy savings follow over the season. Estimates are free across all of Contra Costa County.
